What if we don’t have any skating equipment?
DEFSC is proud to have both a skate and costume closet. Skaters are able to rent figure or hockey skates through the club. This includes the skate rental, guards, care towels and free skate sharpening. The costume closet has many options for all of our competitors to utilize.
What is the annual show?
Each year, the DEFSC holds an annual show to help fundraise for the club. Each year, a theme is picked out and music is cut to ensure that our audience is captivated during our performance. Your skater will skate with their lesson group in two numbers and make take the ice for other numbers they are eligible for. Costumes and decor make the show come alive. Skates can invite family and friends to come and enjoy the show and see all the skills they have worked on during the year.
What does it look like to participate in a competition?
In competitions, your skater is grouped by skill level and age. They can skate Compulsory (no music - just skills in a set order), Free Skate (a routine to music), Interpretive (skating to a song you only hear a few times prior to skating in front of the judges and adding your own choreography/style to a routine you make up on the spot) and Spins (a routine that is heavily focused on spin skills). Once you have skated with your group, judges will determine placement and awards are given.
What is high and low ice time?
Low and high ice are times when practice ice is available and private lessons are held. Low and high ice is determined by your skates level. It is a fantastic time for your skater to work on recently learned skills, moves in the field or skate routines for competition.
